Midnight Raider (intro devlog)
Thanks for your interest in my game Midnight Raider and for visiting my devlog!
What is my hope for the game?
I want to create a Beat 'em up game that doesn't only have button smashing action, but something that has a deep storyline. My hope is the game feels great to play with simple (but sometimes complex) controls that make you want to come back to try again.
What type of game am I planning?
This will be an action game that has a story that progresses as you play. It's not currently planned as a metrovania, but instead, has linear levels. Some of the inspiration comes from arcade Beat 'em ups like TMNT, but also ideas from platformer games like Ninja Gaiden on the NES.
Will the crank be used in the game?
Given the Playdate has a crank, I wanted to integrate it somehow, but I didn't want a game where you have to move around while cranking as that can get a bit tricky to hold the device and control the player. Instead, I've opted to have a crank object in the game that the player has to pickup, attach, and crank in order to open something like a gate or enabling the player to crank to pedal a bicycle.
Who's working on the game?
Currently, I am working as the developer and designer. I'm creating all aspects of the game (with the exception of music, sounds, and open source code for certain features), and with the support of the Playdate community. There have been people who have been immensely helpful whenever I run into coding issues since this is my first game coding in Lua. Also, tutorials on YouTube as well as SquidGod tutorials have helped quite a bit. Thank you all for the support including the Playdate team!
